Southall Mural – Dr. Chila Kumari Burman & Keith Piper

This lecture will explore the history of the Greater London Council’s (GLC) ‘London Against Racism’ publicity campaign and how it intersected with the Black British Art Movement in the 1980s. In 1984, the GLC’s central Ethnic Minorities Unit was committed to informing the public about forms of racism that Londoners of diasporic communities encountered daily. As a result, four murals were commissioned to capture this experience in relation to their location: Keith Piper and Chila Kumari Burman in Southall, Shanti Panchal and Dushka Ahmad in Tower Hamlets, Lubaina Himid and Simone Alexander in Meanwhile Gardens, Notting Hill – and a fourth, acknowledging the the vitality of Brixton was by Gavin Jantjes, assisted by Tam Joseph.
